Multilateralism and trade
Trade is an important engine for inclusive economic growth, sustainable development, and poverty reduction. A strong multilateral system and an inclusive internation trade environment are important for the world’s stability and prosperity. At the same time, there is a need to strengthen the contribution of the multilateral trading system to sustainable development. These goals were stated in the UNCTAD Bridgetown Covenant -—

- Attaining the SDGs through trade
- Tariff trends mostly downwards, but non-tariff measures increasingly used
- International trade in open and transparent markets may help alleviate the effects of shocks and ensure food security
Developing economies export 30% of global services; LDCs only 0.6%.
Tariff peaks concentrate on products
exported by developing economies.
The median country imports 12% of its merchandise as basic food.
