Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth

Decent work is at the heart of the search for dignity for the individual, stability for the family and peace in the community.Juan Somavia

Economic growth is one of the three pillars of sustainable development. But SDG 8 does not refer to a people-blind increase in economic accounts that ignores the impact on the environment. It refers to sustained and inclusive growth that can provide economic opportunities for everyone and help more people to escape poverty. It refers to growth that delivers full and productive employment with safety, job security and equal conditions for women and men. It also refers to growth that protects the environment and ensures a sustainable exploitation of resources.

UNCTAD helps countries build productive capacity, assisting them to create decent jobs and foster sustainable growth. By ensuring that increased Aid for Trade makes a lasting contribution towards decent work and economic growth, and by leading the UN Inter-Agency Cluster on Trade and Productive Capacity, UNCTAD helps to harness the trade-investment nexus to leverage technology, to expand entrepreneurship, creativity, innovation and sustainable tourism, and to expand access to financial services.
